Bemidji State University (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as the Technician of Technology, Art & Design.
This technician position is structured to support faculty and students in on-going activities in the School of Technology, Art & Design (TAD). Responsible for safety compliance within TAD labs. Maintaining a safe and orderly working environment within these various spaces. Maintaining associated equipment, tools, materials, and software within these various spaces. Supervising students and student workers in the safe and responsible use of listed spaces and equipment, including TAD laboratory equipment. Ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to work a flexible schedule (some nights, evenings, and weekends will be required).
Responsibilities of the Technician of Technology, Art & Design include:
- Monitoring compliance with safety protocol to include (Percent of Time: 25%):
- Maintaining a safe, orderly, and secure working environment in the TAD labs.
- Monitoring use of safety equipment and personal protective devices.
- Engaging in safe work practices and continuing training in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Ensuring all students who use equipment are properly trained to do so.
- Communicating with supervisors when safety policies are disregarded.
- Maintenance of tools, equipment, hardware, software and housekeeping in the TAD labs (Percent of Time: 25%:
- Maintaining all TAD lab spaces, equipment, hardware and software.
- Maintaining/updating and enforcing policies/procedures.
- Maintaining/updating MDS sheets.
- Maintain stock and consumables in the TAD labs (Percent of Time: 25%):
- Monitoring TAD lab consumables to maintain appropriate levels of supplies.
- Managing purchases (within a given budget) of supplies for TAD lab activities.
- Ensuring organization of all TAD spaces.
- Additional duties (Percent of Time: 25%):
- Posting and maintaining open lab hours.
- Conducting lab training as requested/needed.
- Developing and reinforcing lab access policies.
- Helping with TAD related projects as requested.
- Maintaining PPE in all lab spaces.
- Assisting with the purchase/installation/maintenance of software and equipment.
- Working closely with BSU’s IT department regarding lab related items.
- Working closely with outside agencies on lab related items.
- Preparing lab spaces for faculty/class use.
- Handling all recycling and disposal associated with lab spaces.
- Managing lab workers and running scheduled lab worker meetings.
- Helping with university and community events.
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- Post-secondary coursework in Technology, Art & Design (TAD) sufficient to provide technical lab services for students, faculty and staff, OR six (6) months of teaching or tutoring experience in TAD at the high school level or above, OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Knowledge of the aforementioned TAD lab technology, processing equipment, and software, or the ability and willingness to learn (woodworking equipment, metal working equipment, CNCs, 3D printers, laser engravers, large-format printers, computer hardware and multiple related materials).
- Ability to oversee, lead, train and evaluate the work activities of other employees in the work area.
- Skill in directing work activities to ensure that standards, deadlines, and procedures/processes are met (such as OSHA standards and/or other applicable safety guidelines or policies).
- Ability to communicate in a variety of formats to gather and relay information with tact and diplomacy.
- Knowledge of maintaining and updating inventories or equipment, supplies and commodities.
- Skill in customer service sufficient to perform the duties with politeness, respect, and interest in positive problem-solving.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a technology or design related field.
- Demonstrated experience or willingness to learn complex computer software programs including, but not limited to: Adobe Suite, Autodesk Suite, Solidworks, VCarve.
- Demonstrated experience in self-directed work.
- A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
Environmental Conditions:
More than 20% of the time: Noise.
Less than 20% of the time: Electric shock; moving mechanical parts; toxic or caustic chemicals.
