Assistant Athletic Trainer - Range C

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU) invites applicants to join our team as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. As a healthcare professional, the Athletic Trainer position ensures safe participation in athletics focused on injury and illness prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning, organization and administration, and professional responsibility. This position works directly with multiple healthcare professionals to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to student-athlete wellbeing.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Athletic Trainer include:

  • Providing comprehensive healthcare and oversite of assigned sports teams and all university athletes. (55%)
    • Holding scheduled hours for injury evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation.
    • Providing secondary care in various sports and helping other athletics trainers as needed.
    • Injury and illness prevention strategies.
    • Rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries.
    • Presence on sideline during athletic competitions and practices to perform care for life-threating or non-life threating injuries.
    • Traveling to away competitions or practices. 
  • Maintaining secure medical records and documentation. (15%)
    • ?Documenting all injuries and illnesses while strictly following HIPAA guidelines.
    • Maintaining proper progress notes and rehabilitation progression.
    • Ensuring proper medical clearance is obtained prior to participation in sport, including health history and physical forms, assumption of risk, consent to treat and liability waivers.
    • Assisting with international student insurance claims. 
  • Communication with doctors, administrators, fellow athletic trainers, coaches, and student-athletes. (15%)
    • Establishing strong rapport with patients and effective educational strategies to convey injury information.
    • Establishing strong rapport with head team physician and other health care professionals.
    • Maintaining collegial relationships with coworkers.
    • Providing daily injury updates and practice status to coaches.
    • Scheduling office visits to appropriate provider if needed for further evaluation.
    • Discussing Emergency Action Plan and debriefing following emergency with team doctors, ambulance service, facility personnel and anyone else involved. 
  • Additional duties as needed for university, athletics, athletic training (10%)
    • Ensuring proper emergency care training and knowledge of policy and procedures.
    • Constant review of Emergency Action Plan and Policies and Procedures.
    • Helping develop and follow policies related to hosting team competitions, per NCAA, NSIC, CCHA and WCHA standards.
    • Identifying, contacting, and implementing resources to achieve goal of comprehensive health care.
    • Assisting in training, and managing student interns, student workers, and observation students in order to deliver educational and healthcare services to student-athletes.
    • Additional duties as assigned by Director of sports medicine and/or Athletic Director.
  • Professional competency. (5%)
    • Successful completion of Continuing Education Units as outlined by the BOC and licensure requirements.
    • Follow the NATA Code of Ethics.
    • Following evidence-based practice to ensure best medical practices.
Minimum qualifications for this position include: 
  • A Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or a closely related field.
  • Professional Licensure/Certifications:
    • Board Certified Athletic Training through the Board of Certification
    • Licensed Athletic Trainer by the Minnesota Board of Health (or eligible to receive licensure)
    • Current CPR/AED certification for Health Care Professional
  • Other Special Requirements (knowledge, skills and abilities):

    • Orthopedic clinical examination and diagnosis

    • Rehabilitation and conditioning of injuries
    • Therapeutic modalities
    • Sports equipment and removal

    • Professional development and responsibility
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred qualifications include:  
  • Master’s degree in athletic training or closely related field and two (2) years of experience working as a Certified Athletic Trainer, preferably in professional or NCAA Division I or Division II level.
